Purpose
Dear Friends,
It has been a while since I’ve written, and although I’ve often contemplated the messages I have received to start writing again, I just never seemed to get around to doing it. The noise in my head is too great now to ignore and I see clearly that it is this “brain noise” alongside the wonderful messages I hear or see repeatedly that really motivate and inspire me to stop procrastinating and take action.
In the past months I’ve beaten myself up for not doing what I said I’d do, for doing something I “should not have done,” and for simply feeling like I’ve been “off purpose.” I wondered to myself if being off purpose would be the ruination of me altogether. Guess what…it was all an illusion!
You see it seems that we are all caught up in the fight to survive, to be the best, and to have a great sense of purpose, but we actually forget there is a purpose in what we already have, a purpose in doing absolutely nothing, a purpose in simply taking time out, even in procrastinating.
Interestingly, I noticed that as I felt off purpose somewhat spiritually and mentally, I was becoming more on purpose in other areas of my life, mainly in my role as teacher and in my relationship.
The liberating idea came to me, that we can never actually be off purpose we are always on purpose somewhere, perhaps in the current areas that we really enjoy and value in our lives
God bless the Angelic world. After pleading for help with my path to purpose they even gave me some sense of purpose in cleaning, (something I just hate to do) and much to my partners delight! It felt good, this simple life of being on purpose through everyday activities. Activities and roles I often take for granted.
So, if we can never be off purpose, why then do we feel guilty about taking time out, being ill, socialising too much or procrastinating?
One of the good old laws of the universe states that :nothing is good or bad, until you relate it to something else. (law of relativity).
It is this relating or comparing to something else or more notably, somebody else that gives rise to such destructive emotions of guilt and self-minimizing.
As I have stated, when we compare ourselves to others we self minimize. Our aim in this life is, in fact, to self actualize and one of the great characteristics of self actualized people is “their ability to see things, even ordinary everyday activities with a freshness of appreciation.” (Abraham Maslow on Self-Actualization)
This enhancement of appreciation for purpose in life’s simple roles and tasks can only lead to greater elements of purpose presenting themselves.
If you feel off purpose in your current situations have a look at who you may be comparing yourself to? It could be a mentor, someone you admire or your closest friend or partner. In any case it is an illusion to assume that someone is more on purpose than you currently are. You do have purpose to the same degree, simply in the area you value most, this includes rest and time out.
I had a humbling lesson on purpose recently. Last week my students, whom I had mentored pastorally for the last 5 years, left my school. The heartfelt gratitude I received on their leaving moved me to tears and led me to reassess why I spend so much time thinking that I’m somehow not on purpose and why I spend too much time wishing I was more on purpose elsewhere. What an illusion!
I had been comparing myself relative to others purpose and success and ungrateful for the mission and purpose right in front of me!
Your purpose is your entire way of being. Too often it is related to your life’s work or mission. I think it’s important to remember that your life purpose will take many roles and forms including how you relate to others, how you conduct everyday tasks, and even procrastinating on what you really want to get around to doing!
Jacqueline Kennedy declared that her purpose was “to raise a family of world leaders.” And she sure did! She found purpose in how she raised her children and this has long impacted the rest of the world.
Are you finding appreciation for your current purpose and roles in life? Learner, partner, healer or friend? Or are you injecting what you think you “should” be doing or having relative to others?
Take a look at some of the activities listed below which I believe can help you appreciate your current purpose, this in turn will lead you to ever greater opportunities of inspired purpose!
1 Write a daily list of what you are currently thankful for.
2 Be present on your daily tasks - see them as vital not as meaningless!
3 Be present in your roles (whatever they may be- Mother, student, ill in bed!)
4 Notice who or what you compare yourself to. Note what you perceive them as having, then seen where you have it in your life! (e.g Wealth financially yet you have wealth socially in your network of friends).
5 Find the drawbacks in the lives of those you compare yourself to. e.g: huge career success but no relationship. (This will balance your perception and make you appreciate what you have!)
Finally my friends ACT AS IF. Act as if you are on purpose because you truly are in all the tasks and roles you do!
Gratitude,
Grace
