What Price Beauty? - What is the True Cost?
My husband takes the mickey out of me for having three bottles of shampoo instead of one. "Well, I think your hair gets used to shampoo, doesn't it?" say I. "What a load of rubbish!" he says. "Why do you fall for these marketing tricks?" I knew when he said it that actually he was totally right, I'd just never questioned that thought. I mean it's not as if soap stops working after you use it for a while.
He's not immune to strange shopping attitudes either. He always seems to buy the second most expensive of any type of gadget he's interested in, as if buying the most expensive would be just falling for the marketers again. He can't really articulate why he thinks the second most expensive item would be the best choice apart from, "price usually indicates quality". Not necessarily true, I would say.
It's a good idea to question your attitudes and think about how you shop. But not just because your other half will laugh at your behaviour. There is something we should all consider before we give away our precious pennies willy-nilly.
There is an Oscar Wilde ‘fairy’ tale: ‘The Young King’ who on the night of his coronation has three dreams which reveal to him the truth behind the robe, sceptre and crown that he is due to wear with such pomp and circumstance the following day: the cruelty, death and sadness that went into their creation. Upon awaking he cannot bring himself to wear them. “Shall joy wear what grief has fashioned?” he says. It is a beautiful story that I recommend you read.
Okay, so we know that in this country and other Western countries we have laws about fair wages and treatment of people, the way goods are created and what goes into them and so on, so that we can be fairly sure that what is manufactured here has been created according to certain standards – as long as those standards are reflected in law and adhered to by the companies involved. But I think that we have reached a stage where we take it for granted that therefore everything in the garden is lovely.
But what is the True Cost?
I can think of a number of questions I’d like answers to before buying my skin cream: Does it work? Is it within my budget? – Everybody asks those ones.
I would suggest that this sort of information should be freely available if we want to make an informed choice.
Other countries may get away with producing goods using ingredients or methods that are no longer allowed in this country, for varying reasons. These methods or ingredients may make the products cheaper than UK goods. So by buying these cheap toys, or clothes or whatever, we again are saying that we are happy to support this, when we have outlawed those methods in our own country.
We have the power to only spend our precious money where we’re sure that we are supporting companies who trade the way we want them to trade. And there are already retailers who pride themselves on their approach to doing business fairly. We will only get more retailers like this if we tell them how to change and refuse to spend money there until they do.
Kate had a spiritual awakening in 2007 and since then has been searching for her own spiritual truth about life, the universe and everything. She discovered information about the Ascended Masters through various websites and particularly recommends askrealjesus.com as a comprehensive guide to how we, all life and planet Earth can be all that we truly are. She has learnt how to connect more effectively with her inner God/guides/Ascended Masters, by using psychological healing techniques to become a purer conduit for God's light, using mindfulness techniques, visualisation and meditation (although she is not very proficient at this...) to open the channel more widely and by learning to distinguish which are true inner voices, intuitive insights and synchronicitous events as opposed to our own ego's interference with these communications. All of these techniques were so much more successful once she learned the value of a simple prayer before each one, asking God to maximise the success of each of these endeavours.
She has now reached a stage where she feels the truth of her and all life's divine nature, has healed a lot of her psychology and feels a close connection with divine direction. She is keen to connect with other spiritual seekers to work together to see God's plan more clearly and multiply the power of enlightened actions.
